Context

Matthew 24:42 concludes a section of the Olivet Discourse, Jesus’ teaching on the Mount of Olives about the destruction of the temple, the signs of His coming, and the end of the age. The verse begins with “therefore,” linking it directly to the preceding verses, where Jesus describes the sudden separation of two men in a field and two women grinding at the mill—one taken, the other left. The command to watch is the logical response to that unexpected event.

Meaning

The Greek word translated “watch” (γρηγορεῖτε) means to stay awake and be alert. It is not passive waiting but active readiness. Jesus emphasizes that the exact hour of His return is unknown to anyone except the Father. This uncertainty is not a reason for anxiety but for constant spiritual vigilance. The call is to live each day with the awareness that Christ could return at any moment, and to be faithful in our duties as His servants.
