“Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his lord hath made ruler over his household, to give them meat in due season?”

This verse is part of a larger passage known as the Olivet Discourse, where Jesus provides teachings to His disciples about the signs of His second coming and the end times. In this particular verse, Jesus uses a parable to illustrate the qualities of a faithful and wise servant who has been entrusted with the responsibility of managing his master’s household.

Let’s break down the verse and explore its meaning in more detail:

“Who then is a faithful and wise servant”: Jesus begins by posing a question about the characteristics of a faithful and wise servant. He is referring to someone who is reliable, trustworthy, and possesses wisdom in carrying out their responsibilities.

“Whom his lord hath made ruler over his household”: The servant described here is someone who has been given authority and responsibility by his master. In this context, the “household” represents the people of God, which could refer to the church or the broader community of believers.

“To give them meat in due season”: The servant’s primary task is to provide nourishment and sustenance to the people under his care. The phrase “meat in due season” signifies the provision of spiritual nourishment, such as teaching the Word of God, offering guidance, and ensuring that the needs of the household are met at the appropriate time.

This parable conveys a deeper spiritual lesson for believers. It emphasises the importance of faithfulness, wisdom, and responsibility in fulfilling the roles and responsibilities God has given us within the body of Christ. It reminds us that we are called to serve and care for others, providing spiritual nourishment and meeting their needs.

Furthermore, this verse serves as a reminder of the imminent return of Jesus Christ. It encourages believers to be vigilant and ready, faithfully fulfilling their duties while eagerly awaiting the Lord’s coming.

In a broader context, Matthew 24 contains prophecies and teachings regarding the signs of the end times, including the coming tribulations, false messiahs, and the ultimate return of Jesus Christ. Therefore, this verse also prompts believers to live in readiness, being diligent in our service and wise in our actions as we await the fulfilment of God’s kingdom.

In summary, Matthew 24:45 underscores the qualities of a faithful and wise servant who serves diligently, meeting the needs of God’s people. It encourages believers to remain vigilant and prepared for the return of Jesus Christ, while fulfilling our responsibilities with wisdom and faithfulness.
