Matthew 24:44

Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh.

Matthew 24:44 (KJV)

Matthew 24 records Jesus’ Olivet Discourse, given in response to the disciples’ private question about the sign of His coming and the end of the age (Matthew 24:3). Verse 44 concludes His exhortation to be watchful and prepared, following the illustration of the householder who would have watched had he known the hour the thief would come (Matthew 24:43). The word “Therefore” links the command to be ready to the preceding teaching on the suddenness and unpredictability of the Lord’s return.

Jesus begins with “Therefore,” signaling that what follows is the logical conclusion of His previous teaching. The central imperative is readiness—being prepared for the coming of the Son of Man. This readiness is not primarily about knowing the timing, which is explicitly unknown (Matthew 24:36), but about constant spiritual vigilance and faithful living. The phrase “in such an hour as ye think not” underscores the unexpected nature of His coming, demanding a continual posture of watchfulness rather than complacency. The certainty of the event, combined with the uncertainty of its timing, is the basis for the urgent call to readiness.

The title “Son of man” is Jesus’ self-designation, rooted in Daniel 7:13-14, where the Son of man comes with the clouds and receives dominion and glory. Here, it emphasizes His humanity while also pointing to His divine authority as the promised Messiah and coming judge and king. Jesus uses this title to identify Himself as the one who will return in glory.

The same teaching appears in Luke 12:40, where Jesus says, “Be ye therefore ready also: for the Son of man cometh at an hour when ye think not.” There, the context is servants waiting for their master’s return from a wedding feast, reinforcing the call to be dressed for service and ready for action.

This verse calls believers to live in a state of readiness and spiritual preparedness. It encourages us to be vigilant, faithful, and focused on living in a manner that aligns with God’s will at all times. Rather than trying to predict the exact timing of His return, we should be continually ready, watchful in prayer, and faithful in our duties. This readiness is not about fear but about faithful obedience and constant expectation.

Matthew 24:44 calls for believers to be ready and watchful for the return of the Son of Man. It urges us to live in a constant state of spiritual preparedness and to prioritise our relationship with God above all else. May we strive to remain faithful, vigilant, and ready for the coming of our Lord.
