Mark 13:37
“And what I say unto you I say unto all, Watch.”
Context:This verse is part of a larger passage known as the Olivet Discourse, where Jesus speaks to His disciples about the signs of the end times and the coming of the Son of Man. In this particular verse, Jesus concludes His teaching by emphasizing the importance of being watchful and vigilant.
The context of Mark 13 is Jesus’ response to His disciples’ questions about when the temple in Jerusalem would be destroyed and what would be the sign of His coming and the end of the age. In verses 5-36, Jesus gives a detailed account of various events and signs that would precede His return.
In verse 37, Jesus sums up His message by saying, “And what I say unto you I say unto all, Watch.” Here, the word “watch” means to be alert, attentive, and prepared. Jesus is urging His disciples (and by extension, all believers) to be watchful for the signs of His coming and to live in a state of readiness.
This verse highlights the importance of spiritual vigilance and preparedness in the lives of believers. It serves as a reminder that as followers of Christ, we should not be caught unaware or spiritually asleep. We are called to be watchful and discerning, keeping our hearts and minds focused on the things of God and being aware of the signs of the times.
The concept of watching can be understood in a few different ways:
- Watchfulness in a spiritual sense:This involves being alert and vigilant in our relationship with God. It means cultivating a deep and abiding communion with Him through prayer, studying His Word, and seeking His guidance. It also entails guarding our hearts against sin and staying faithful to God’s commandments.
- Watchfulness for the signs of the times:Jesus’ teaching in Mark 13 includes various signs that would precede His return, such as wars, famines, and earthquakes, as well as false prophets and the spreading of the gospel to all nations. By paying attention to these signs and comparing them to biblical prophecy, we can have a greater understanding of the times we are living in and the nearness of Christ’s return.
- Watchfulness for personal readiness:Jesus frequently emphasized the importance of being ready for His return, as no one knows the exact day or hour. Being watchful means living a life that is in alignment with God’s will, continually growing in faith, and actively serving Him. It involves examining our lives, repenting of sin, and ensuring that we are ready to meet the Lord at any moment.
In summary, Mark 13:37 reminds us of the need to be spiritually watchful and prepared for the return of Christ. It encourages us to be alert to the signs of the times, diligent in our relationship with God, and ready to meet Him when He comes. May we all strive to be watchful, faithful, and obedient followers of Jesus Christ.
