Mark 14:40
And when he returned, he found them asleep again, (for their eyes were heavy,) neither wist they what to answer him.
Mark 14:40 (KJV)
Context
In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus had withdrawn to pray, leaving Peter, James, and John to keep watch. When He returned, He found them asleep again—this was the second time, despite His earlier warning and exhortation to watch and pray.
Meaning
The phrase “for their eyes were heavy” points to their genuine physical exhaustion. It was late at night, and the sorrow of the evening weighed on them. Yet their sleep also contrasts sharply with Jesus’ faithful vigilance in prayer. The second phrase, “neither wist they what to answer him”, reveals their shame and confusion. They were caught in failure and had no excuse or reply.
Application
This verse reminds us that even the closest followers of Jesus can falter in moments of spiritual trial. Physical exhaustion is real, but spiritual vigilance requires intentional effort. When we fail to watch and pray, we may find ourselves without an answer, unprepared for the trials ahead.
Reflection
Jesus remained fully committed to the Father’s will while His disciples slept. Their inability to comprehend or support Him in His hour of greatest need foreshadows the challenges they would face. Yet this passage also offers hope: despite their failure, Jesus did not abandon them. He continued to prepare them for what was to come.
