Mark 14:58

We heard him say, I will destroy this temple that is made with hands, and within three days I will build another made without hands.

Context

Mark 14:53-57 places this accusation within Jesus’ trial before the high priest and the council. The religious leaders sought false testimony to condemn Him, but Mark 14:56 notes that many witnesses gave conflicting accounts. The charge in verse 58 is part of this pattern of false witness.

Meaning

The witnesses claim Jesus said He would destroy the temple made with hands and build another made without hands in three days. This misrepresents Jesus’ earlier teaching. In John 2:19, Jesus said, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up,” referring to His body (John 2:21). The accusers twisted His words, making Him the destroyer and implying a literal building. Their testimony is false, yet it ironically points to the truth of His death and resurrection.

Biblical connections

The contrast between a temple “made with hands” and one “made without hands” echoes the New Testament teaching that believers are the temple of God, built by the Spirit, not human effort (1 Corinthians 3:16-17; 2 Corinthians 5:1).
