Mark 14:66

And as Peter was beneath in the palace, there commeth one of the maides of the high Priest. Mark 14:66 (KJV)

Let us study Mark 14:66 from the King James Version (KJV). This verse is part of the account of Peter’s denial of Jesus, which is described in Mark 14:66‑72. In the preceding verses, Jesus has been arrested and brought before the high priest and the council. Peter, one of Jesus’ closest disciples, follows at a distance and enters the courtyard of the high priest’s palace. It is here that the events of his denial take place. In verse 66 we learn that Peter was in the lower part of the palace, likely referring to the courtyard. As Peter is in this place, one of the maids of the high priest approaches him. Later, a servant girl of the high priest’s household recognizes Peter as one of Jesus’ disciples and accuses him of being with Jesus. The subsequent verses reveal that she again identifies Peter as a follower of Jesus and presses the accusation. This encounter is significant because it marks the beginning of Peter’s denial. Despite his initial fervor and assurance that he would stand by Jesus, Peter succumbs to fear and denies any association with Jesus three times before the rooster crows, just as Jesus had foretold (Mark 14:29‑30). Peter’s denial serves as a cautionary example and a humbling reminder of the frailty of human nature, even for those who are committed followers of Christ. It shows the contrast between Peter’s bravado and his eventual weakness, highlighting the importance of relying on God’s strength rather than our own. The account also foreshadows the theme of Jesus’ suffering and abandonment. Just as Peter denies Jesus, the other disciples desert Him, and ultimately Jesus is forsaken even by His closest followers. This leads to His crucifixion and ultimately His resurrection, which form the heart of the Christian faith.
