Mark 15:35

Posted on 18 May at 14:42
Listen to this article

“And some of them that stood by, when they heard it, said, Behold, he calleth Elias.”

Context:Mark 15 recounts the events leading up to Jesus’ crucifixion and His subsequent death on the cross. In this chapter, Jesus is mocked, beaten, and handed over to be crucified. Verse 35 takes place while Jesus is on the cross, and it captures a response from those who stood nearby witnessing His crucifixion.

In Mark 15:35, we see that some of the onlookers misunderstood Jesus’ words. They heard Him say, “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?” which translates to, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” (Mark 15:34). However, they mistakenly thought that Jesus was calling for Elijah (Elias in the KJV) instead of addressing God.

This misunderstanding reveals the cultural and religious context of the time. According to Jewish tradition, it was believed that Elijah, a prominent prophet, would return to prepare the way for the Messiah. The people expected Elijah’s arrival before or during the Messiah’s coming. So, when they heard Jesus’ cry, some thought that He was calling for Elijah, indicating their misunderstanding of His identity and purpose.

Jesus’ identity and purpose:The people’s confusion regarding Jesus’ words reflects a lack of understanding about who Jesus truly was. While they recognized the name Elijah, they failed to grasp that Jesus was the long-awaited Messiah, the Son of God. This highlights the importance of truly knowing and recognizing Jesus’ identity and understanding His purpose as the Savior of the world.

Misinterpretation of Scripture:The misunderstanding of Jesus’ words demonstrates the danger of misinterpreting Scripture. It is crucial to approach the Bible with proper context, discernment, and guidance from the Holy Spirit to avoid misapprehension and distortion of its teachings. Studying the Bible with humility and a reliance on God’s wisdom will help us interpret it correctly.

Fulfilled prophecies:The expectation of Elijah’s coming before the Messiah’s arrival reminds us of the numerous prophecies in the Old Testament that were fulfilled in Jesus. Jesus Himself confirmed that John the Baptist fulfilled the role of Elijah as the one who prepared the way for Him (Matthew 11:14). This highlights the faithfulness of God in fulfilling His promises and underscores Jesus’ fulfillment of Messianic prophecies.

Jesus’ suffering and abandonment:Jesus’ cry of feeling forsaken by God on the cross reveals the depths of His suffering and the weight of our sin that He bore. It reminds us of His willingness to endure abandonment and separation from the Father for our redemption. This shows the extent of His love and sacrifice, emphasizing the magnitude of God’s grace and forgiveness.
