Mark 15:36

And one ranne, and filled a spunge full of vineger, and put it on a reed, and gaue him to drinke, saying, Let alone, let vs see whether Elias will come to take him downe. Mark 15:36 (KJV)

This verse is part of the account of Jesus’ crucifixion and occurs after He had been on the cross for some time, nearing the moment of His death. In the preceding verses we learn that Jesus had been offered wine mingled with myrrh or gall (Mark 15:23), which was intended to alleviate pain, but He refused it.

As Jesus hung on the cross, people passed by mocking Him and challenging Him to save Himself if He truly was the Son of God (Mark 15:29‑32). The chief priests and scribes also joined the mockery, saying, “Let Christ, the King of Israel, descend now from the cross, that we may see and believe.”

Amidst this atmosphere, someone—simply described as “one”—ran, filled a sponge with wine vinegar, placed it on a reed (a long, thin stick), and offered it to Jesus, saying, “Let him alone; let us see whether Elias will come to take him down.” The reference to Elias (Elijah) is significant because Jewish tradition held that Elijah would appear before the Messiah. The crowd used this expectation to taunt Jesus, implying that if He were truly the Messiah, Elijah would intervene to rescue Him.

The verse therefore highlights the intense mockery and derision Jesus endured on the cross. It shows the cruel and disrespectful treatment He received from those who witnessed His suffering. Yet, despite the scorn, Jesus remained steadfast, fulfilling His purpose and displaying remarkable grace and love throughout His ordeal.

In conclusion, Mark 15:36 captures a moment of scorn and disbelief directed toward Jesus while He was on the cross. It demonstrates the extent of the mockery He faced and serves as a reminder of His incredible sacrifice for humanity.
