Mark 15:45
“And when he knew it of the centurion, he gave the body to Joseph.”
This verse is part of the account of Jesus’ crucifixion and burial. To understand the significance of Mark 15:45, let’s examine the context leading up to this verse.
In Mark 15, we read about the events surrounding Jesus’ crucifixion. After enduring intense suffering and humiliation, Jesus was finally crucified on the cross. Following His death, we see various reactions from those present, including the centurion, who oversaw the execution, and Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent member of the Jewish council.
In verse 39, the centurion witnessing Jesus’ death was struck with awe, acknowledging Jesus’ innocence and divine nature. He said, “Truly this man was the Son of God!” This centurion recognized the truth about Jesus and bore witness to it. His recognition is significant because it reveals that Jesus’ crucifixion was not just an ordinary execution; it was a pivotal event in human history that marked the sacrificial death of the Son of God.
Moving to verse 43, we learn that Joseph of Arimathea, a respected member of the council, came to request Jesus’ body from Pilate. Joseph was a secret disciple of Jesus, afraid to openly show his devotion due to his position. However, he mustered the courage to approach Pilate and ask for the body of Jesus so that he could give Him a proper burial.
Now, let’s focus on Mark 15:45: “And when he knew it of the centurion, he gave the body to Joseph.” After receiving confirmation from the centurion about Jesus’ death, Pilate granted Joseph’s request and gave him the body of Jesus. This act of Pilate allowing Jesus’ body to be taken down from the cross and given to Joseph was highly unusual.
Normally, crucified criminals would be left on the cross, denied a proper burial as an additional form of shame and punishment. The fact that Pilate permitted Joseph to take Jesus’ body and give Him a dignified burial holds significant meaning. It fulfills the prophecy in Isaiah 53:9, which says that the Messiah’s grave would be assigned with the wicked, but “he made his grave with the rich.” By providing a tomb for Jesus, Joseph of Arimathea fulfilled this prophecy and honored Jesus by treating Him with respect and dignity in His death.
Additionally, Joseph’s actions demonstrated his love and devotion to Jesus. Despite the risks associated with openly associating himself with Jesus, Joseph did not hesitate to take a stand and care for Jesus’ body. His act of faith and reverence signifies his belief in Jesus as the Messiah, even in His death.
