Mark 15:46

Listen to this article

“And he bought fine linen, and took him down, and wrapped him in the linen, and laid him in a sepulchre which was hewn out of a rock, and rolled a stone unto the door of the sepulchre.”

This verse describes the actions of Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent member of the Jewish council who was also a disciple of Jesus, in burying the body of Jesus after His crucifixion.

Joseph of Arimathea’s Role:Joseph was a wealthy and respected man who had not consented to the decision of the council to have Jesus crucified. He was waiting for the kingdom of God and took a bold step in asking Pilate for the body of Jesus. Joseph’s actions demonstrated his faith in Jesus and his desire to honor Him in His death.

Fine Linen:The verse mentions that Joseph bought fine linen to wrap Jesus’ body. This detail highlights the care and respect with which Joseph treated Jesus’ body. Fine linen was a luxurious material typically associated with wealth and importance. By using fine linen, Joseph ensured that Jesus was given an honorable burial.

The Sepulcher:Joseph laid Jesus’ body in a sepulcher, which was a tomb or burial chamber. This particular sepulcher was hewn out of a rock, indicating it was a natural or man-made cave-like structure. The mention of a rock-cut tomb fulfills the prophecy of Isaiah 53:9, which states that the Messiah’s burial place would be with the rich.

The Rolled Stone:After placing Jesus’ body in the sepulcher, Joseph rolled a stone to the door of the tomb. This stone served as a barrier, sealing the entrance of the tomb. It was a common practice to secure tombs in this manner to protect them from tampering and theft. The placement of the stone in front of the sepulcher also serves as a foreshadowing of the miraculous event that would follow-the resurrection of Jesus.

Overall, Mark 15:46 emphasizes the honorable burial of Jesus and the involvement of Joseph of Arimathea, a follower of Jesus. It portrays the care, respect, and faith demonstrated by Joseph in taking responsibility for the burial of his Lord. The mention of the fine linen, the rock-cut tomb, and the rolled stone contribute to the narrative and foreshadow the subsequent events of Jesus’ resurrection.
