Mark 16:3

Listen to this article

“And they said among themselves, Who shall roll us away the stone from the door of the sepulchre?”

Context and Background:Mark 16 records the events that took place after the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and His resurrection. In the preceding verses, it is mentioned that Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome brought spices to anoint Jesus’ body. They were concerned about who would roll away the large stone that sealed the entrance to the tomb.

The Stone and the Tomb:The stone mentioned in this verse refers to the large stone that was placed at the entrance of the tomb where Jesus’ body was laid. It was a common practice in Jewish burial customs to seal tombs with a heavy stone to secure them. The women were aware of the stone’s presence and were unsure of how they would gain access to Jesus’ body to anoint it.

Symbolism and Reflection:a. Human Limitations: The concern expressed by the women about the stone serves as a reminder of human limitations. They recognised that the stone was too heavy for them to move on their own. Similarly, it reminds us that there are challenges and obstacles in life that we cannot overcome by our own strength or abilities.

b. Dependency on God: The women’s question reflects a sense of dependency on someone else to address their problem. It is an acknowledgement of their need for help from a higher power. This verse encourages us to turn to God when faced with obstacles that seem insurmountable.

c. Faith and Trust: Despite their uncertainty about the stone, the women proceeded to the tomb. Their act of faith and trust in God’s provision is commendable. It teaches us that even when we don’t have all the answers or solutions, we should still move forward in faith, trusting that God will make a way.

The Resurrection:The immediate context of this verse is the resurrection of Jesus. The women’s concern about the stone is addressed in the following verses, where they discover that the stone had already been rolled away by an angel. This event emphasises the power and sovereignty of God over human limitations and obstacles. The resurrection of Jesus demonstrates that nothing is impossible for God and that He can overcome any barrier in fulfilling His plans and purposes.

  • Trust in God’s Provision:Like the women, we may face situations where the obstacles before us seem insurmountable. However, this verse reminds us to trust in God’s provision and rely on His power to overcome any challenges we encounter.
  • Stepping Out in Faith:We are encouraged to step out in faith, even when we don’t have all the answers or understand how things will work out. God often reveals His plan as we take the first step, just as the women discovered the stone rolled away when they arrived at the tomb
  • Confidence in God’s Power:Reflecting on the resurrection of Jesus should strengthen our confidence in God’s power and His ability to accomplish His purposes in our lives. We can have assurance that nothing is impossible for Him, and He can remove any obstacles in our path.

Remember, when studying the Bible, it is beneficial to consider the surrounding verses, consult commentaries, and seek guidance from trusted spiritual leaders to gain a comprehensive understanding of the text and its application to our lives.
