Mark 16:4

And when they looked, they saw that the stone was rolled away: for it was very great.

Mark 16:4 (KJV)

Mark 16 is the concluding chapter of the Gospel of Mark, recording the resurrection of Jesus Christ. In the preceding verses, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome went to the tomb to anoint Jesus’ body. As they traveled, they worried about who would roll away the stone sealing the tomb’s entrance.

In ancient Jewish burial customs, tombs were often caves sealed by a large stone. This barrier prevented unauthorized access and protected the tomb from disturbance. The women’s concern was practical, for the stone was not small.

The verse reports that when the women looked, they saw the stone already rolled away. The detail that it was “very great” emphasizes the magnitude of what they witnessed. This was not a minor feat of human strength but a supernatural act. The size of the stone highlights the miraculous nature of its removal, showing that God had intervened before the women arrived.

The rolled-away stone carries profound theological weight. It symbolizes the resurrection itself: the barrier representing death’s finality had been overcome. The stone, once an obstacle, became a testimony to God’s power over death. Its removal was not merely convenient but a divine act clearing the way for the empty tomb and the revelation of the risen Christ.

Mark 16:4 encourages believers to trust that no obstacle is insurmountable when placed before God. Just as the stone was rolled away, God can remove the barriers and difficulties we face. The verse calls us to faith in God’s power, even when circumstances seem impossible by human measure.

The women looked and saw the evidence with their own eyes. Their observation became a testimony to the reality of the resurrection. Believers today are invited to look beyond physical barriers and recognize God’s sovereign work, trusting that His plans are not thwarted by human limitations.

The stone, though very great, was no match for the power of God. This truth remains a source of hope. The resurrection is the central event of the Christian faith, demonstrating victory over sin, death, and the grave. The rolled-away stone also represents the opening of the way to salvation and eternal life for all who believe in Jesus Christ.
