Mark 16:6

Posted on 18 May at 14:42
Listen to this article

“And he saith unto them, Be not affrighted: Ye seek Jesus of Nazareth, which was crucified: he is risen; he is not here: behold the place where they laid him.”

Context:Mark 16 is the concluding chapter of the Gospel of Mark and records the resurrection of Jesus Christ. It begins with the visit of Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome to Jesus’ tomb after His crucifixion.

The Announcement:In Mark 16:6, an angel speaks to the women who had come to the tomb, addressing their fear or astonishment. The angel tells them not to be afraid and assures them that they are seeking Jesus of Nazareth, the one who was crucified. This statement confirms that the women were in the right place and seeking the right person.

The Resurrection:The angel delivers the astounding news: “He is risen; he is not here.” This proclamation of Jesus’ resurrection is the core message of Christianity. Jesus, who had been crucified and laid in the tomb, has triumphed over death and has risen from the dead.

The Empty Tomb:The angel instructs the women to witness the evidence for themselves by saying, “Behold the place where they laid him.” This directive invites the women to see that the tomb is empty, confirming the truth of the angel’s words.

  • The Resurrection:The resurrection of Jesus Christ is a fundamental doctrine in Christianity. It signifies the victory of Jesus over sin, death, and the powers of darkness. It demonstrates His divine power and fulfills the prophecies regarding the Messiah’s resurrection.
  • Assurance of Faith:The angel’s message provides assurance to the followers of Jesus that their faith is not in vain. The empty tomb serves as a visible reminder of the truth of the resurrection, offering hope and confidence to all believers.
  • Conquering Fear:The angel’s reassurance to the women, “Be not affrighted,” reminds us that faith in the risen Christ dispels fear. In the face of uncertainty, tribulations, or challenges, the knowledge that Jesus is alive can bring comfort and courage.
  • Witnessing and Sharing:The angel instructs the women to bear witness to the empty tomb. Similarly, as believers, we are called to share the good news of Jesus’ resurrection with others, spreading the hope and salvation found in Him.
  • Faith in the Crucified and Risen Christ:The angel’s identification of Jesus as the one who was crucified and is now risen emphasizes the redemptive significance of Jesus’ sacrificial death on the cross. It reminds us that our faith is centered on the crucified and risen Christ.

Overall, Mark 16:6 conveys the momentous news of Jesus’ resurrection, underlining its central role in Christian faith and providing encouragement, assurance, and a call to witness and share this transformative message.
