Mark 16:7
“But go your way, tell his disciples and Peter that he goeth before you into Galilee: there shall ye see him, as he said unto you.”
Context:Mark 16:7 is part of the resurrection narrative in the Gospel of Mark. It occurs immediately after the account of Jesus’ resurrection and the empty tomb.
Jesus’ Resurrection:Prior to this verse, Mark records that the women who came to the tomb on the first day of the week encountered an angel who informed them of Jesus’ resurrection (Mark 16:5-6). The angel tells them that Jesus has risen and instructs them to go and tell His disciples, including Peter, that Jesus will meet them in Galilee.
The Significance of “and Peter”:The mention of Peter specifically is significant because it highlights his unique relationship with Jesus. Peter had denied Jesus three times during His trial and crucifixion (Mark 14:66-72). By specifically naming Peter, Jesus shows His forgiveness and reaffirms Peter’s place among the disciples.
Galilee:The instruction to meet Jesus in Galilee is significant because it was the place where Jesus began His ministry and where many of His early disciples were from. It also symbolises a fresh start and a return to the disciples’ original calling.
Fulfillment of Jesus’ Words:Jesus had previously foretold His resurrection and the gathering of His disciples in Galilee. For example, in Mark 14:28, Jesus says, “But after I am risen again, I will go before you into Galilee.” The angel’s message in Mark 16:7 confirms that Jesus’ words were coming to pass.
- Overall:Mark 16:7 emphasises the power of Jesus’ resurrection, His forgiveness, and the call for His disciples to be reunited with Him.
