Mark 5:12
“And all the devils besought him, saying, Send us into the swine, that we may enter into them.”
Context:Mark 5:1-20 tells the story of Jesus’ encounter with a demon-possessed man in the region of the Gerasenes (or Gadarenes). The man was living among the tombs, possessed by a legion of demons. Jesus commanded the unclean spirits to come out of him and cast them into a herd of swine. The swine then rushed down a steep place into the sea and drowned.
Demon possession:This passage highlights the reality of demonic influence and possession. The man in this story was severely oppressed by multiple demons. It demonstrates Jesus’ authority over the spiritual realm and His ability to deliver people from demonic bondage.
Request of the demons:The demons recognised Jesus’ authority and pleaded with Him to allow them to enter a nearby herd of swine. It is important to note that the demons desired to possess something, even if it was not a human vessel. This highlights their destructive nature and their intent to wreak havoc.
Jesus’ response:Jesus granted the demons’ request and permitted them to enter the swine. This action may seem perplexing, but it serves several purposes. It demonstrates Jesus’ control over the situation and His power over the demonic forces. Additionally, it emphasises the immediate and devastating consequences of demonic influence.
Significance of the swine:The presence of swine in this story is significant because pigs were considered unclean animals under Jewish law. The event underscored the spiritual uncleanness and destruction associated with the presence of the demons. The swine rushing into the sea and drowning symbolise the destruction and judgment that came upon them.
Impact on the witnesses:The herdsmen who witnessed this event were filled with fear and reported it to the people in the surrounding region. The locals were astonished by what had happened and came to see for themselves. This miraculous incident demonstrated the power of Jesus, further establishing His authority and sparking curiosity among the people.
Lessons for believers:
- a. Jesus has authority over all spiritual forces: This passage reminds us of the supreme authority of Jesus over the demonic realm. As believers, we can find comfort in knowing that Jesus has power over any spiritual forces that may try to oppress or influence us.
- b. The destructive nature of demonic influence: The account of the swine rushing into the sea serves as a reminder of the destructive consequences of allowing demonic influence in our lives. It underscores the importance of resisting the devil and seeking deliverance through Christ.
- c. Sharing the testimony of God’s work: The response of the herdsmen and the people in the region shows the impact of witnessing God’s power. As believers, we should be willing to share our testimonies of God’s work in our lives, which can lead others to seek and experience His transformative power.
