Mark 5:1-20 records Jesus’ encounter with a demon-possessed man in the region of the Gerasenes. The man lived among the tombs, and a legion of unclean spirits had taken control of him. In verse 12, all the devils besought Him, saying, “Send us into the swine, that we may enter into them.” Their request was not a negotiation but an earnest plea for permission, acknowledging that Jesus held sovereign control over them.

Meaning

The Greek word translated “besought” (παρεκάλεσαν) indicates earnest pleading, and “Send us” (Πέμψον ἡμᾶς) is an imperative, showing the urgency of their request. The demons did not ask out of love or respect, but out of fear and with destructive intent. They desired to possess something, even if it was not a human vessel, revealing their relentless drive to wreak havoc. Their request also shows that even the forces of evil are subject to Christ’s command; they could not act without His permission.

Jesus granted the demons’ request, and the swine rushed down a steep place into the sea and drowned. This action demonstrates Jesus’ complete authority over the spiritual realm and His power to deliver people from demonic bondage.
