Context
Mark 5:6 belongs to the account often called the “Gadarene Demoniac” (Mark 5:1-20). Jesus and His disciples crossed the Sea of Galilee to a mainly Gentile region, where a man possessed by many demons lived among the tombs. He was so violent that chains could not restrain him. When the man saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and worshipped Him.
Meaning
The Greek word translated “worshipped” (prosekunēsen) means to bow down or prostrate oneself in reverence. The man’s action was not a casual greeting; it was an act of homage and submission. Even in his tormented condition, he recognised Jesus’ authority and ran to meet Him. The demons within him also acknowledged Jesus, crying out that He was the Son of the Most High God (Mark 5:7).
This response is striking because the man had been isolated, violent, and beyond human help. Yet when Jesus appeared, he did not flee or attack; he ran toward Jesus and worshipped. His desperate state did not prevent him from responding to the presence of divine power.
Biblical connections
The man’s worship stands in contrast to the reaction of the townspeople after his deliverance. Instead of rejoicing, they were afraid and begged Jesus to leave their region (Mark 5:15-17). The delivered man, however, wanted to stay with Jesus, though Jesus sent him home to tell what God had done for him (Mark 5:18-19).
Application
Mark 5:6 challenges us to examine our own response to Jesus. Do we, like the demoniac, run to Him in worship despite our brokenness and struggles? Or do we, like the people of the region, keep Him at a distance out of fear or indifference? The man’s example shows that no one is beyond the reach of Christ’s authority. Even in spiritual darkness, a person can be drawn to worship Him.
This verse also reminds us that true worship involves humility and surrender. The man bowed before Jesus, acknowledging His lordship and His power to deliver. We are invited to do the same—to come to Jesus as we are, confessing our need and trusting Him to transform our lives.
