Mark 6:25
And she came in straightway with haste unto the king, and asked, saying, I will that thou give me by and by in a charger the head of John the Baptist.
Mark 6:25 (KJV)
Context
This verse sits within the larger account of John the Baptist’s imprisonment and death. Earlier in Mark 6, Herod had married Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, a union John openly condemned as unlawful. Herodias resented John and wanted him killed, but Herod protected him, knowing him to be a righteous and holy man (Mark 6:17-19). At Herod’s birthday feast, Herodias’s daughter danced before the guests and pleased Herod so much that he promised to grant her any request, even half his kingdom. Prompted by her mother, she asked for the head of John the Baptist on a platter (Mark 6:24).
Meaning
In Mark 6:25, the girl comes “straightway with haste” to the king and repeats her demand, specifying that John’s head be given “in a charger.” The word “charger” in the King James Version refers to a large platter or dish, underscoring the gruesome nature of the request. Her urgency reveals the determination behind Herodias’s vengeful plan and the moral decay within the royal household. The daughter’s immediate compliance with her mother’s instruction shows how deeply Herodias’s hatred controlled the situation.
Biblical connections
This episode contrasts the righteous prophet John with the ungodly political power of Herod. John’s bold confrontation of Herod’s sin led to his imprisonment and eventual execution, illustrating the cost of faithfulness. The narrative also warns against the dangers of pride, revenge, and moral compromise, as Herod’s rash oath and desire to save face before his guests led to an innocent man’s death.
Application
This verse challenges believers to consider the cost of discipleship and the need for courage in the face of opposition. John’s unwavering commitment to speak God’s truth, regardless of personal consequences, serves as an example for Christians today. It also warns against the subtle encroachment of sin, reminding us to guard our hearts against malice, pride, and the pressure to conform to worldly influences. The haste of the daughter’s request emphasizes how quickly evil can be carried out when sin is unchecked.
Reflection
Mark 6:25 is a sobering reminder of the reality of evil and the importance of standing for truth, even at great personal cost. Yet it also points to God’s sovereignty: despite human wickedness, God accomplishes His purposes. For the believer, this passage is a call to remain steadfast in faith, trusting that God sees all things and will bring justice in His time.
