Mark 6:37

Listen to this article

He answered and said vnto them, Giue yee them to eate. And they say vnto him, Shall we goe and buy two hundred penniworth of bread, and giue them to eate? Mark 6:37 (KJV)

He answered and said unto them,

Give ye them to eat. And they say unto him, Shall we go and buy two hundred pennyworth of bread, and give them to eat? Mark 6:37 (KJV)

Context: Mark 6:37 is part of the account of Jesus feeding the five thousand. In this passage, Jesus and His disciples were in a desolate place, and a large crowd had gathered to listen to His teaching. As it grew late, the disciples suggested sending the people away to obtain food, but Jesus responded with the instruction to give the crowd something to eat.

Test of faith: The disciples’ response in Mark 6:37 reveals their lack of faith. They were focused on the practicality of providing food for such a large crowd. Instead of trusting in Jesus’ power and provision, they questioned whether it was feasible to arrange enough food to feed everyone.

Dependence on God’s provision: Jesus intended to teach His disciples an important lesson about relying on God’s provision. Their suggestion to send the crowd away to buy food showed their limited perspective and lack of understanding of His miraculous power. Jesus wanted them to understand that with Him, all things are possible. By involving the disciples in the process of feeding the crowd, He challenged them to trust in Him and witness His miraculous work.

Significance of the miracle: In the subsequent verses (Mark 6:38‑44), Jesus performed a miracle by multiplying the five loaves of bread and two fish to feed the entire crowd. The miracle not only satisfied their physical hunger but also revealed Jesus’ divine power and provision. It demonstrated that Jesus is the bread of life (John 6:35) who can provide abundantly for our needs.

Application to our lives: Mark 6:37 teaches several valuable lessons. First, it reminds us to trust in God’s provision rather than relying solely on our own understanding and resources. Just as Jesus asked His disciples to give the crowd something to eat, He may call us to participate in His work and demonstrate our faith by stepping out in obedience, even when the task seems daunting. Second, the passage encourages us to recognize that God can do the impossible. Even when faced with overwhelming circumstances, we should never underestimate His power to provide and meet our needs. Our role is to trust Him, obey His commands, and offer what we have, no matter how insignificant it may seem. Finally, Mark 6:37 prompts us to examine our own hearts and faith. Are we prone to doubt, like the disciples, or are we willing to surrender our limited understanding to Jesus and allow Him to work miraculously in and through us?

Conclusion: In conclusion, Mark 6:37 challenges us to have faith in God’s provision, trust in His power to do the impossible, and willingly participate in His work, even when it seems challenging or beyond our capabilities.
