Mark 9:20

Listen to this article

“And they brought him unto him: and when he saw him, straightway the spirit tare him, and he fell on the ground, and wallowed foaming.”

This verse is part of a larger passage in Mark 9:14-29 that describes the account of Jesus’ encounter with a boy who was possessed by an unclean spirit. The boy’s father had brought him to Jesus’ disciples for healing, but they were unable to cast out the demon.

In verse 20, the scene unfolds as the father brings his afflicted son to Jesus. As soon as Jesus sees the boy, the unclean spirit within him reacts violently. The spirit “tore him” and caused the boy to fall on the ground, where he convulsed and foamed at the mouth. This vivid description highlights the intensity of the boy’s condition and the power of the evil spirit within him.

The narrative continues in the following verses, where Jesus engages in a conversation with the boy’s father, who expresses his desire for his son to be healed if Jesus is able to help. Jesus reassures him that anything is possible for the one who believes. The father then pleads with Jesus, acknowledging his faith but also his struggle with unbelief. In response, Jesus rebukes the unclean spirit and commands it to leave the boy. The spirit convulses him once more before departing, leaving the boy completely healed.

This passage demonstrates several important themes. It highlights Jesus’ authority and power over evil spirits and his compassion for those who suffer. It also emphasises the importance of faith and trust in Jesus’ ability to bring about healing and deliverance.

The story of the boy with the unclean spirit serves as a reminder that Jesus is the source of true spiritual power and that faith in Him can bring about miraculous transformation. It encourages believers to bring their needs and struggles to Jesus, relying on Him for deliverance, healing, and restoration.

By studying this passage, we can learn valuable lessons about the authority of Jesus, the role of faith in our lives, and the compassion of our Saviour. It reminds us that even when faced with seemingly impossible situations, we can place our trust in Jesus and seek His intervention in our lives.
