Mark 9:21

Posted on 18 May at 14:09

And he asked his father, Howe long is it agoe since this came vnto him? And he said, Of a child. Mark 9:21 (KJV)

Mark 9:21 belongs to a larger narrative in which a man brings his demon‑possessed son to Jesus for healing. The boy had been afflicted by a mute spirit, causing him to experience convulsions and dangerous situations.

In the verses that precede this encounter, Jesus was on the Mount of Transfiguration with Peter, James, and John. While He was there, the remaining disciples faced a situation in which they were unable to cast out the demon from the boy.

When Jesus descended from the mountain, He was met by a large crowd, including scribes who were questioning and disputing with the disciples. At that moment the father of the demon‑possessed boy saw Jesus, approached Him, and explained the desperate situation.

Jesus then asked the father how long his son had been afflicted by this condition. The father’s reply was, “Of a child,” indicating that the boy had suffered from the affliction since childhood.

The father’s response shows the persistence of the affliction: it had lasted for a considerable period, likely from the boy’s earliest years, emphasizing both severity and longevity. His willingness to seek out Jesus reveals deep desperation and hope; he recognized Jesus’ authority and power and believed that healing might be possible.

Jesus’ compassion is evident in His inquiry about the duration of the suffering. By asking, He demonstrates concern and empathy for both father and son, seeking to understand the depth of the problem before proceeding with the healing.

This verse functions as a transition point, setting the stage for Jesus’ subsequent interaction with the boy and His ultimate display of divine power in delivering the child from the demon. It also underscores the importance of acknowledging and understanding the depth of people’s struggles before offering help and compassion.
