Mark 9:28

Listen to this article

“And when he was come into the house, his disciples asked him privately, Why could not we cast him out?”

This verse is part of a larger passage in Mark 9:14-29, which describes an incident where a man brings his son, who is possessed by a spirit, to Jesus’ disciples for deliverance. The disciples attempted to cast out the spirit but were unsuccessful. In this verse, the disciples approach Jesus privately and ask Him why they were unable to cast out the spirit.

The necessity of faith: Earlier in Mark 9:23, Jesus tells the father of the possessed boy, “If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.” Faith plays a vital role in exercising spiritual authority and experiencing God’s power. The disciples’ failure to cast out the spirit may be attributed to their lack of faith.

The power of prayer: In Mark 9:29, Jesus responds to the disciples’ question by saying, “This kind can come forth by nothing but by prayer and fasting.” While the disciples may have relied on their previous experiences and abilities, Jesus emphasizes the significance of seeking God in prayer and fasting. This verse highlights the need for spiritual preparation and dependence on God’s strength when confronting spiritual challenges.

The limitations of human effort: The disciples, although chosen by Jesus and witnesses to His miracles, encountered a situation they couldn’t handle on their own. This passage demonstrates that human effort alone is insufficient to overcome certain spiritual obstacles. It reminds us that we must rely on the power and guidance of the Holy Spirit to effectively engage in spiritual warfare and minister to others.

Humility and seeking guidance: Instead of pretending to have all the answers or making assumptions, the disciples approached Jesus privately and sought His explanation. Their willingness to seek understanding shows humility and a recognition of their need for guidance. Similarly, in our own lives, it is essential to seek wisdom from God and consult His Word when faced with challenges or questions.
