Mark 9:29

Posted on 18 May at 14:46
Listen to this article

“And he said unto them, This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting.”

Context:In Mark 9:14-29, Jesus and three of His disciples-Peter, James, and John-come down from the mountain where Jesus was transfigured. They find a crowd gathered around the other nine disciples who were unable to cast out a demon from a boy. The father of the afflicted boy explains the situation to Jesus, seeking His help.

Bible Study:

The inability to cast out the demon:The disciples’ inability to cast out the demon in this passage raises questions about the effectiveness of their efforts. Despite having been given the authority by Jesus to heal and cast out demons (Mark 6:7), they were unable to help the boy. This situation emphasizes the need for a deeper level of faith and spiritual discipline.

The power of prayer:Jesus responds by saying, “This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer.” Here, prayer is presented as a vital component in dealing with the challenges and spiritual battles we face. Jesus highlights the importance of seeking God’s intervention through prayer, recognizing that some obstacles require a specific level of spiritual engagement.

The role of fasting:In addition to prayer, Jesus mentions fasting as another essential element. Fasting involves voluntarily abstaining from food or certain activities for a focused period of time to seek a deeper connection with God. Fasting helps to discipline the body and intensify the spiritual focus during prayer. It serves as a way to humble oneself and express dependence on God’s power.

Understanding the “kind” referred to:When Jesus says, “This kind can come forth by nothing,” He refers to the specific type of demon that possessed the boy. Some Bible translations include the phrase “of this sort” to clarify this meaning. It suggests that there are different levels or types of spiritual challenges that require increased spiritual effort to overcome. It is a reminder that not every situation can be easily resolved but requires a deeper reliance on God.

Lessons for believers:Mark 9:29 teaches us several important lessons:

  • a. Faith and spiritual discipline: This passage encourages believers to deepen their faith and cultivate spiritual disciplines like prayer and fasting.
  • b. Humility and dependence on God: It reminds us that our strength alone is insufficient to overcome certain challenges. We must acknowledge our dependence on God’s power and seek His intervention.
  • c. The significance of spiritual warfare: The mention of demons highlights the reality of spiritual battles and the need to engage in prayer and fasting to address them effectively.

Overall, Mark 9:29 underscores the importance of faith, prayer, and fasting when facing spiritual challenges that require a deeper level of engagement. It reminds believers to rely on God’s power and seek His guidance in all circumstances.
