Matthew 10:1
“And when he had called unto him his twelve disciples, he gave them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease.”
Context:Matthew 10 is a chapter that records Jesus sending out His twelve disciples on a mission. Prior to this, in Matthew 9, Jesus had been preaching, teaching, and healing the sick. Seeing the multitude and their great need, Jesus was moved with compassion and expressed His desire for labourers to be sent into the harvest. In response to this, Jesus called His twelve disciples and commissioned them with specific authority and power.
Calling of the Twelve:Jesus called His twelve disciples, who were also known as apostles. These were individuals who had been following Jesus closely and learning from Him. They were chosen to have a unique role in His ministry. The disciples mentioned here are Simon Peter, Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew (Nathanael), Thomas, Matthew (also called Levi), James the son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus (also known as Lebbaeus or Judas, not Iscariot), Simon the Canaanite (also known as Simon the Zealot), and Judas Iscariot (who would later betray Jesus).
Authority against Unclean Spirits:Jesus gave His disciples power against unclean spirits. This authority allowed them to cast out demons, freeing people from demonic oppression. This power was not from themselves but was delegated by Jesus. It demonstrated the spiritual battle between the kingdom of God and the forces of darkness.
Power to Heal:In addition to authority over unclean spirits, Jesus also gave His disciples the power to heal all manner of sickness and disease. This power enabled them to bring physical healing to those who were afflicted, demonstrating the compassion and mercy of God.
Application and Lessons:a. Calling and Commissioning: Jesus calls and commissions His followers to be actively involved in His mission. While the twelve disciples had a unique role as apostles, all believers are called to share the Gospel and make disciples.
b. Authority and Power: The authority and power given to the disciples were not their own, but came from Jesus. Similarly, as believers, we are empowered by the Holy Spirit to fulfil God’s purposes in our lives.
c. Spiritual Battle: The mention of authority against unclean spirits reminds us that there is a spiritual battle taking place. As followers of Christ, we have the authority to resist and overcome the forces of darkness through the power of Jesus’ name.
d. Compassion and Healing: Jesus’ ministry was characterized by compassion for the hurting and His desire to bring healing. We, too, are called to show compassion and bring God’s healing to a broken world.
In conclusion, Matthew 10:1 marks the moment when Jesus called and commissioned His twelve disciples, giving them authority over unclean spirits and the power to heal. This passage reminds us of our own calling to participate in God’s mission, the spiritual battle we face, and the compassion and healing we are to extend to others.
