Matthew 9:38

Context:To understand this verse better, let’s look at the context of the passage. Prior to Matthew 9:38, Jesus went about teaching, preaching, and healing various diseases and afflictions. He saw the crowds, and His heart was moved with compassion because they were like sheep without a shepherd (Matthew 9:36). Jesus recognised the spiritual need of the people and the urgency of the situation.

The Lord of the Harvest:Jesus refers to Himself as the “Lord of the harvest.” This title signifies His authority and sovereignty over the spiritual harvest. He is the one who oversees and directs the work of gathering people into His kingdom.

Praying for Laborers:Jesus instructs His disciples to pray to the Lord of the harvest to send forth laborers into His harvest. This prayer emphasises the need for more workers or laborers who are willing to share the Gospel and bring people into a relationship with God. Jesus recognises that there is much work to be done and calls upon His followers to join in this mission.

The Spiritual Harvest:The harvest metaphor used here signifies the gathering of souls into the kingdom of God. Just as crops are harvested at the appropriate time, there is a spiritual harvest of people who are ready to receive the message of salvation and enter into a relationship with God. Jesus desires His disciples to actively participate in this harvest by sharing the Good News and making disciples.

• Application:This verse has several important applications for believers today. It reminds us of the urgency and importance of sharing the Gospel and making disciples. We are called to be labourers in God’s harvest field, spreading His love and truth to those around us. Like the disciples, we should pray for more workers to join in this mission, recognising that it is ultimately God who sends and equips labourers for His work.
