Matthew 9:37

Listen to this article

“Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few.”

Context:In this verse, Jesus is speaking to His disciples after witnessing the multitudes of people who were in need of spiritual guidance and healing. He had compassion for them because they were like sheep without a shepherd (Matthew 9:36). Jesus recognizes that the work of spreading the Gospel and ministering to people is vast, and He emphasizes the need for more laborers to join in the task.

Key Points:

  • Abundant Harvest:Jesus acknowledges that there is an abundance of people ready to receive the message of the Kingdom of God. The "harvest" refers to the people who are receptive to the Gospel and are ready to be gathered into God’s Kingdom. It reflects the spiritual hunger and longing present among many individuals.
  • Few Laborers:Jesus points out that despite the abundance of people in need, there are only a few laborers. The "laborers" represent those who actively engage in the work of spreading the Gospel, teaching, and ministering to others. It implies that the work of ministry and sharing the Good News requires dedicated individuals who are willing to devote themselves to the task.
  • The Need for Laborers:Jesus’ statement underscores the need for more workers to join in the mission of spreading the Gospel. By recognizing the scarcity of laborers, Jesus is inviting His disciples and subsequent generations of believers to actively participate in the work of the Kingdom. The call extends to everyone who follows Jesus, urging them to become laborers in the spiritual harvest.
  • A Call to Action:This verse serves as a call to action for believers to engage in evangelism and discipleship. It emphasizes the urgency and importance of sharing the Gospel with others and ministering to those in need. Jesus desires His followers to be actively involved in the work of expanding God’s Kingdom on earth.

Implications and Application:

  • Awareness of the Harvest:Believers should develop an awareness of the spiritual needs around them. Just as Jesus had compassion for the multitudes, we should have a heart for people and a desire to see them come to a saving knowledge of Christ.
  • Willingness to Labor:This verse challenges believers to be willing laborers in the spiritual harvest. Each believer can contribute to the work of the Kingdom by sharing their faith, serving others, and using their gifts and talents for God’s glory.
  • Prayer for Laborers:Following this verse, Jesus encourages His disciples to pray to the Lord of the harvest to send laborers (Matthew 9:38). Therefore, it is essential for believers to intercede for more workers in the Kingdom and ask God to raise up individuals who will dedicate themselves to the task.
  • Personal Commitment:Each believer should evaluate their own commitment to the work of the Kingdom. Are we actively engaged in spreading the Gospel and ministering to others? Are we willing to step out of our comfort zones and respond to the call of Christ?

In conclusion, Matthew 9:37 highlights the abundant spiritual harvest and the need for more laborers in the Kingdom of God. It serves as an invitation for believers to actively engage in spreading the Gospel and ministering to those in need. May we heed this call and be faithful laborers in the work of the Lord.
