Matthew 9:36

But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd.

Matthew 9:36 (KJV)

Matthew 9:36 comes immediately after a summary of Jesus’ Galilean ministry: He went through all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and disease (Matthew 9:35). The crowds that gathered were large and needy, and this verse explains the heart behind Jesus’ tireless work.

The verse begins with Jesus seeing the multitudes. His response was not distant pity but deep, gut-level compassion—the Greek word used here conveys a visceral mercy that moves a person to act. The people are described as “fainted, and were scattered abroad,” words that picture them as worn down, thrown down, and left without guidance or protection. The image of sheep without a shepherd was a familiar Old Testament figure for Israel’s spiritual condition when godly leadership was lacking (Numbers 27:17; 1 Kings 22:17; Ezekiel 34:5). Jesus saw both the physical and spiritual needs of the people, and His compassion moved Him to teach, preach, and heal.

This shepherd imagery points forward to Jesus’ own words in John 10:11-16, where He calls Himself the Good Shepherd who lays down His life for the sheep. It also prepares for His instruction to the disciples in Matthew 9:37-38, where He tells them the harvest is plentiful but the laborers are few. The compassion of Jesus is not merely emotional; it is the compassion of the promised Shepherd of Israel, who cares for the helpless and acts on their behalf.

This verse calls believers to cultivate the same compassion Jesus showed. Just as He was moved by the weary and scattered, Christians are urged to see the spiritual and physical needs around them and respond with practical care. The shepherd-sheep metaphor reminds us of the responsibility to share the Gospel and guide those who are spiritually adrift, becoming instruments of God’s love. It also encourages believers to offer comfort and support to the burdened, pointing them to the true rest found in Christ.

Matthew 9:36 reveals the depth of Jesus’ compassion and humanity’s deep need for a shepherd. It challenges every follower to develop a heart that mirrors His, to care for the lost and the weary, and to reflect the heart of the Good Shepherd who seeks and saves the lost.
