Matthew 9:34

Listen to this article

But the Pharisees said, He casteth out the deuils through the prince of the deuils. Matthew 9:34 (KJV)

This verse is part of a larger passage in Matthew 9:32‑34 that describes Jesus healing a demon‑possessed man who was mute. Let’s delve into the context and meaning of this verse.

In this account, Jesus demonstrates His authority over demonic forces by healing the man possessed by a demon.

The Pharisees, a religious sect of that time, witness this miraculous event. However, instead of recognising Jesus as the Messiah or acknowledging His power, they make an accusation. They claim that Jesus drives out demons by the power of Beelzebub, also known as the prince of the devils or the prince of demons.

This accusation by the Pharisees is an example of their growing opposition to Jesus and their refusal to accept His ministry and teachings. By attributing Jesus’ actions to demonic forces, they seek to undermine His authority and discredit Him in the eyes of the people.

It is important to note that Jesus had been performing many miracles, healing the sick, casting out demons, and preaching the kingdom of God. His works were evident and displayed the power of God at work through Him.

However, the Pharisees, due to their hardened hearts and refusal to believe in Jesus, attribute His miracles to evil rather than acknowledging Him as the Son of God.

Jesus later addresses this accusation in Matthew 12:24‑30, explaining the fallacy of the claim. He states that if He were casting out demons by the power of Beelzebub, then Satan’s kingdom would be divided and would ultimately fall. Jesus further emphasises that it is by the Spirit of God that He performs these miracles, establishing that His power comes from the Holy Spirit and not from demonic sources.

This passage serves as a warning against willful blindness and the danger of rejecting God’s work and attributing it to evil. It reveals the hardness of heart and spiritual blindness of the Pharisees, who refused to acknowledge the signs and wonders Jesus performed.

As we study this verse and its surrounding context, we are reminded of the importance of discernment and recognising God’s work in our lives. It also highlights the significance of having an open heart and mind to receive the truth, rather than allowing prejudice and preconceived notions to cloud our judgement.

Overall, Matthew 9:34 serves as a pivotal moment in Jesus’ ministry, showcasing the resistance and opposition He faced from religious leaders. It underscores the need for faith and discernment in recognising God’s power and presence in our lives.
