Matthew 13:15
Context:Matthew 13 records several parables taught by Jesus, including the Parable of the Sower. In verse 15, Jesus explains the reason for teaching in parables. He quotes from Isaiah 6:9-10 to highlight the spiritual condition of the people and their lack of understanding.
The Condition of the People’s Heart:Jesus describes the people’s heart as “waxed gross.” This means that their hearts have become dull, insensitive, and hardened towards spiritual truth. Their spiritual perception has been dulled, and they are unable to grasp the deeper meaning of Jesus’ teachings.
Dull Ears and Closed Eyes:Jesus also mentions that their ears are “dull of hearing” and their eyes are “closed.” This emphasizes their lack of receptivity and willingness to understand the message of the kingdom of God. They have chosen to ignore and reject the truth, closing their hearts and minds to it.
Purpose of the Parables:Jesus teaches in parables to both reveal and conceal truth. On one hand, the parables make spiritual truths accessible to those who are genuinely seeking and receptive. On the other hand, they serve as a means of judgment and concealment for those who have hardened their hearts and closed their eyes and ears.
Divine Intervention:Jesus states that their spiritual condition is the reason He speaks in parables, so that they may not perceive, understand, and be converted. This statement implies that God allows the consequences of their own choices and the hardening of their hearts to take effect.
The Invitation to Conversion and Healing:Although Jesus speaks in parables to conceal the truth from those with hardened hearts, His ultimate desire is for people to see, hear, understand, and be converted. He longs to heal them spiritually and restore their relationship with God.
This verse reminds us of the importance of having open hearts, receptive ears, and attentive eyes to the message of the kingdom of God. It calls us to examine our own hearts and attitudes towards spiritual truth and challenges us to seek understanding and conversion. May we always have hearts that are tender, ears that are open, and eyes that are willing to see the truth God reveals to us.
