Listen to this article

That it might bee fulfilled which was spoken by the Prophet, saying, I will open my mouth in parables, I wil vtter things which haue bin kept secret from the foundation of the world. Matthew 13:35 (KJV)

Context: Matthew 13 is commonly known as the “Parable of the Sower” chapter, where Jesus teaches the crowds using various parables. In verse 35, Matthew explains that Jesus spoke in parables to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet.

Fulfillment of Prophecy: Matthew emphasizes that Jesus’ use of parables aligns with what was previously spoken by the prophet. This shows that Jesus’ teaching style and methods were not accidental or arbitrary but had a divine purpose.

The Prophet’s Words: Matthew does not mention the name of the specific prophet who spoke these words. However, this passage echoes the sentiment found in Psalm 78:2, which reads, “I will open my mouth in a parable; I will utter dark sayings of old.” Matthew may be alluding to this psalm or referring to a general pattern of prophetic utterances.

Jesus as the Revealer of Secrets: The verse states that Jesus would utter things that had been kept secret since the foundation of the world. By speaking in parables, Jesus reveals hidden truths about the kingdom of God that were previously concealed. His parables often contain spiritual insights and teachings that require careful consideration and understanding.

Purpose of Parables: Jesus’ use of parables served multiple purposes. On one hand, they served as a teaching tool that conveyed profound truths in a relatable and memorable way. Parables engaged the listeners’ imagination and encouraged them to think deeply about the message being conveyed. On the other hand, parables also acted as a means of veiling spiritual truths from those who were not receptive or genuinely seeking understanding. The parables sifted the hearts of the listeners, separating those with true spiritual hunger and openness from those with hardened hearts.

Prophetic Significance: Jesus’ fulfillment of the prophet’s words indicates that He is the long‑awaited Messiah who fulfills Old Testament prophecies. By teaching in parables, Jesus demonstrates His authority as the revealer of divine mysteries and the fulfillment of God’s plan.
