Matthew 14:26

“And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear.”

Context

In the preceding verses, Jesus had sent His disciples ahead of Him in a boat while He dismissed the crowd. Later in the night, Jesus went to join them, walking on the surface of the sea. When the disciples saw Him approaching, they were frightened, thinking He was a ghost or a spirit.

The disciples’ reaction

The verse tells us that when the disciples saw Jesus walking on the sea, they were troubled and cried out in fear. This response is understandable since it was an extraordinary sight. Walking on water defied the laws of nature and challenged their understanding of what was possible.

Faith and doubt
