Context

This verse concludes the account of Jesus walking on water, which begins in Matthew 14:22. After feeding the five thousand, Jesus sent His disciples ahead in a boat while He dismissed the crowds and went up into a mountain to pray. During the night, the disciples were battered by wind and waves on the Sea of Galilee. In the fourth watch, Jesus came to them walking on the water, and they were terrified, thinking they saw a ghost. Jesus reassured them, saying, “Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid” (Matthew 14:27).

Peter then asked to come to Jesus on the water. He walked for a time, but when he saw the wind, he became afraid and began to sink, crying, “Lord, save me” (Matthew 14:30). Jesus immediately caught him and said, “O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?” (Matthew 14:31). Then both Jesus and Peter entered the boat, and the wind ceased.

Meaning

The immediate context shows that the calming of the wind is a direct response to Jesus’ presence in the ship. The effect is ascribed to Christ’s coming into the boat, not to Peter’s action. This act demonstrates Jesus’ divine power over nature: He who walked on the sea while the wind was blowing now brings perfect calm upon entering the boat. The disciples’ response in verse 33, worshipping Him and declaring, “Of a truth thou art the Son of God,” confirms the significance of this miracle.

Biblical connections

John’s Gospel adds that immediately the ship was at the land whither they went (John 6:21), another proof of His divine power. This connection reinforces that Jesus’ authority extends over both the elements and the course of events.

Application

Jesus’ presence brings peace. When He entered the boat, the wind ceased. Similarly, when Jesus enters our lives, He brings calm to the storms we face. In the midst of life’s challenges and trials, we can find solace and tranquility in Him.

Faith in Jesus overcomes doubt. Peter initially demonstrated faith by stepping out of the boat and walking on water. However, when he focused on the wind instead of Jesus, doubt crept in, causing him to sink. This teaches us the importance of keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, trusting in Him even when circumstances seem overwhelming.

Jesus’ power extends over nature. The fact that Jesus could calm the wind demonstrates His authority over creation. It affirms His divine nature and shows that nothing is beyond His control. This should inspire awe and confidence in His ability to intervene in our lives and bring about miraculous changes.
