Listen to this article

“Then came she and worshipped him, saying, Lord, help me.”

Context:Matthew 15:25 is a part of the story commonly known as the “Canaanite Woman’s Faith.” In this passage, a Gentile woman, whose daughter was possessed by a demon, approached Jesus for help. Initially, Jesus seemed hesitant to respond to her request, but the woman persisted in her faith.

Worship in Desperation:The verse begins with the woman coming to Jesus and worshiping Him. This act of worship reflects her recognition of Jesus’ authority and power. It demonstrates her humble posture before Him, acknowledging Him as Lord. Worshiping Jesus in her desperate situation reveals her trust in Him as the source of help and deliverance.

Cry for Help:The woman’s plea, “Lord, help me,” expresses her earnest desire for assistance. She recognized Jesus as the One who could provide the solution to her problem. Her request demonstrates her faith in His ability to intervene and bring healing to her daughter.

Persistence and Faith:This woman’s encounter with Jesus is notable because, at first, Jesus responded by saying that He was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel (Matthew 15:24). However, the woman did not give up but persisted in her plea. Her persistence reveals her unwavering faith and determination to seek Jesus’ help, despite apparent obstacles and cultural barriers.

The Woman’s Great Faith:Jesus acknowledged the woman’s faith and commended her for it. In Matthew 15:28 (KJV), Jesus said to her, “O woman, great is thy faith: be it unto thee even as thou wilt.” This statement highlights the importance of faith in approaching Jesus and receiving His help. The woman’s persistence and faith played a crucial role in her daughter’s healing.

Lessons for Believers:a) Persistence in prayer: The Canaanite woman’s story encourages believers to persistently seek God’s help and intervention in their lives. Even when faced with apparent obstacles or delays, we should not lose heart but continue to approach Him with faith.

b) Recognition of Jesus’ authority: By worshiping Jesus, the woman acknowledged His authority and power. As believers, we should approach Jesus with reverence, recognizing Him as the Lord and the source of our help.

c) The universality of Jesus’ grace: This story reminds us that Jesus’ grace extends beyond cultural and ethnic boundaries. The woman was a Gentile, but Jesus responded to her faith and granted her request. It emphasizes that salvation and deliverance are available to all who come to Jesus in faith, regardless of their background.

In conclusion, Matthew 15:25 presents a powerful example of a Gentile woman’s persistent faith and humble worship before Jesus. Her encounter demonstrates the importance of unwavering faith, persistence in prayer, and recognizing Jesus as the ultimate source of help and deliverance.
