Matthew 15:34
“And Jesus saith unto them, How many loaves have ye? And they said, Seven, and a few little fishes.”
Context:Matthew 15:34 is part of the narrative where Jesus feeds a multitude of people with just a few loaves of bread and fish. This miracle is often referred to as the feeding of the four thousand. Prior to this event, Jesus had been preaching and healing people in the region of Decapolis for three days. The crowd following Him had grown, and they were in a desolate place where there was no readily available food.
Faith in God’s Provision:The disciples’ response to Jesus’ question reveals their lack of faith in God’s ability to provide. Despite having witnessed the feeding of the five thousand earlier (Matthew 14:13-21), they still doubted. Jesus wanted to teach them that with Him, nothing is impossible. It reminds us to trust in God’s provision even when circumstances seem impossible.
Recognition of Available Resources:The disciples mentioned that they had seven loaves of bread and a few little fish. Though seemingly insufficient for such a large crowd, the disciples acknowledged what was available. Sometimes, we underestimate the significance of our limited resources when placed in the hands of Jesus. He can multiply and use them beyond our imagination.
Willingness to Offer What We Have:The disciples willingly offered their meager provisions to Jesus. They didn’t hold back but presented what little they had. In our lives, God calls us to offer ourselves and all that we have to Him, no matter how insignificant it may seem. When we surrender everything to Him, He can use it for His glory.
The Abundance of God’s Provision:Verse 37 tells us that the multitude ate and was filled, with seven baskets full of leftovers remaining. This miracle highlights God’s abundant provision. When we place our meager resources in His hands, He blesses and multiplies them far beyond our expectations.
Spiritual Significance:The feeding of the four thousand not only met the physical needs of the people but also symbolizes Jesus’ care and provision for our spiritual hunger. Just as Jesus miraculously provided bread and fish, He is the Bread of Life (John 6:35). He satisfies our deepest spiritual hunger, offering eternal life through His sacrifice on the cross.
Application: Matthew 15:34 encourages us to have faith in God’s provision, recognize and offer what we have to Him, and trust in His abundant supply. It reminds us that no matter how meager our resources may seem, when we place them in Jesus’ hands, He can bless, multiply, and use them for His glory.
- Overall:Matthew 15:34 teaches us important lessons about faith, trust, and surrendering to God’s provision.
