Matthew 15:10
And he called the multitude, and said unto them, Hear, and understand:
Matthew 15:10 (KJV)
Context
In Matthew 15, Jesus has just been confronted by Pharisees and scribes who questioned why His disciples did not follow the tradition of ceremonial handwashing. He had already exposed their hypocrisy by quoting Isaiah, noting that they honored God with their lips while their hearts were far from Him. Now, Jesus deliberately turns from the religious leaders to address the crowd, signaling that His teaching is for all who are willing to listen, not just the elite.
Calling the multitude
Jesus called the crowd together, showing His desire to teach the common people, not only the religious leaders. This act demonstrates His concern for everyone’s spiritual well-being and His willingness to correct misunderstandings publicly.
“Hear, and understand”
This phrase is more than a casual request; it is a summons to deep, spiritual comprehension. The Greek words used here emphasize active listening and mental grasp. Jesus wanted the crowd not merely to hear His words but to understand their deeper meaning, especially because His next teaching would overturn common assumptions about ritual purity.
Spiritual insight over external rituals
By addressing the crowd, Jesus prepares them for a vital truth: true defilement is not external, based on ceremonial traditions, but internal, stemming from the condition of the heart. This teaching is developed in the following verses, where Jesus explains that what comes out of the mouth defiles a person, not what goes in.
Application
This verse encourages us to listen attentively and seek understanding when it comes to God’s Word. It challenges us to move beyond religious rituals and traditions and focus on the condition of our hearts. Jesus wants us to prioritize internal purity, a transformed heart, and a genuine relationship with God.
