Matthew 15:8

Listen to this article

“This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.”

Context:To understand the significance of this verse, it’s essential to consider the context in which it was spoken. In Matthew 15, Jesus was confronted by the Pharisees and scribes who criticised His disciples for not observing the tradition of washing hands before eating. Jesus responded by exposing the hypocrisy of the religious leaders and their outward religious practices that lacked genuine heart devotion.

Hypocrisy condemned:In this verse, Jesus quotes from Isaiah 29:13, highlighting the hypocrisy of the religious leaders. The people of Jesus’ time appeared to be religious, drawing near to God with their words and paying lip service to Him. However, Jesus discerned that their hearts were far from God, indicating that their external displays of worship were not aligned with their internal attitudes.

Heart versus outward appearance:Jesus emphasises the importance of the heart in true worship. He is not condemning external acts of worship but rather the disconnect between the outward expression and the inward reality. God desires authentic devotion, where the heart aligns with the outward actions. Merely going through religious motions without a genuine heart transformation is empty and displeasing to God.

Relationship with God:This verse highlights the need for a genuine, heartfelt relationship with God. It reminds us that God looks beyond outward appearances and rituals and desires an intimate connection with His people. True worship involves both the external expression of reverence and the inner transformation of the heart.

Application to our lives:As believers, we should examine our own hearts and motives in our worship and service to God. We need to ensure that our words and actions align with a genuine love for God and others. It is crucial to cultivate a relationship with God characterised by sincerity, humility, and authenticity. Our external religious practices should flow naturally from a transformed heart that is devoted to God.

  • Guarding against hypocrisy:This verse serves as a warning against hypocrisy and reminds us to guard against it. We should avoid being mere spectators or participants in religious activities without genuine commitment. Instead, our lives should consistently reflect our faith in Christ, both in private and public, and our worship should be an overflow of our love for God.

In conclusion, Matthew 15:8 challenges us to examine our hearts and ensure that our worship and devotion to God are authentic and genuine. It emphasises the importance of aligning our inward attitudes with our outward expressions of faith. Let us strive to draw near to God with sincerity, allowing our hearts to be transformed and our worship to be pleasing to Him.
