Matthew 15:7

Listen to this article

“Ye hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying,”

Context:In Matthew 15, Jesus is engaged in a discussion with the Pharisees and scribes who had come from Jerusalem. They were questioning Jesus about His disciples’ failure to follow the tradition of washing hands before eating. Jesus responds by pointing out their hypocrisy and the emptiness of their external rituals. He quotes the prophet Isaiah to expose their misguided ways.

The term “hypocrites” refers to those who pretend to be righteous or act in a way that contradicts their true character or beliefs. In this context, Jesus is addressing the Pharisees and scribes, who were known for their outward displays of religious observance but lacked true devotion to God in their hearts.

Jesus quotes Isaiah, indicating that the words of the prophet were fulfilled in the actions and attitudes of the religious leaders of His time. The specific passage Jesus refers to is Isaiah 29:13.

Jesus’ rebuke to the Pharisees and scribes highlights the difference between external rituals and the condition of the heart. The religious leaders were focused on outward practices but neglected the inner transformation and genuine relationship with God.
