Matthew 16:7

Posted on 18 May at 11:23
Listen to this article

And they reasoned among themselues, saying, It is because we haue taken no bread. Matthew 16:7 (KJV)

Context: In this verse, Jesus is having a conversation with His disciples. Prior to this, Jesus had performed miracles such as feeding the multitude and healing the sick. Now, He warns the disciples about the leaven of the Pharisees and the Sadducees, referring to their teachings and hypocrisy (Matthew 16:6). The disciples, however, misunderstand Jesus’ metaphor and begin to discuss among themselves, thinking that He was talking about physical bread.

Misunderstanding the Spiritual: The disciples’ response reveals their limited understanding of Jesus’ message. They were so focused on physical needs that they failed to grasp the spiritual significance of His words.

Lack of Faith: The disciples’ response also indicates a lack of faith. Despite witnessing Jesus’ miracles, such as feeding thousands of people (Matthew 14:13-21), they were preoccupied with their lack of physical provisions. While they had moments of doubt, they also demonstrated belief in Jesus, like Peter walking on water (Matthew 14:28-31).

Jesus’ Patience and Teaching: Throughout the Gospels, we see Jesus patiently instructing His disciples, even when they struggled to comprehend His teachings. In the subsequent verses (Matthew 16:8-12), Jesus clarifies His metaphor and admonishes them for their lack of faith and understanding. He reminds them of the miracles they had witnessed and warns them to beware of the false teachings of the religious leaders.

Application to Our Lives: The disciples’ response in Matthew 16:7 challenges us to examine our own faith and understanding of spiritual matters. Do we sometimes focus more on our physical needs and concerns rather than trusting in God’s provision? Are we attentive to the spiritual truths Jesus wants to teach us through His Word? It is essential for us to seek a deeper understanding of God’s teachings and rely on His provision, both physically and spiritually.

Trusting in God’s Provision: Jesus’ response to the disciples’ misunderstanding serves as a reminder that God is faithful to provide for His children. Just as He had miraculously supplied their physical needs before, He would continue to do so. This encourages us to have faith in God’s faithfulness and provision, even in times of uncertainty or scarcity.

In summary, Matthew 16:7 highlights the disciples’ misunderstanding of Jesus’ metaphor and their lack of faith. It challenges us to examine our own faith, priorities, and understanding of spiritual matters. Ultimately, it reminds us to trust in God’s provision and seek a deeper understanding of His teachings.
