Matthew 17:22

And while they abode in Galilee, Jesus said unto them, The Son of man shall be betrayed into the hands of men:

Matthew 17:22 (KJV)

Jesus had just been transfigured before Peter, James, and John, revealing His divine glory. Now, back in Galilee, He speaks plainly about His coming betrayal. Galilee was a central region of His ministry, and the disciples were likely traveling toward Judea for the Passover feast, where Jesus knew He would suffer.

Jesus calls Himself the “Son of man”, a title that points to the Messiah. The phrase “shall be betrayed into the hands of men” means to be delivered up treacherously, as Judas later did. This betrayal would lead to His arrest, trial, and crucifixion.

This is the second of three passion predictions in Matthew’s Gospel, following Matthew 16:21 and preceding Matthew 20:17-19. It follows the Transfiguration, making the contrast between His glory and His suffering striking. The disciples’ grief, noted in the next verse, shows they understood the gravity of His words, even if they did not yet grasp the necessity of His death and resurrection.

Jesus’ suffering was not an accident but a divinely ordained path, which He embraced willingly. His death and resurrection provide salvation and reconciliation between God and humanity. This truth invites believers to trust that God’s purposes are accomplished even through trials and apparent defeats, and to respond with gratitude for the sacrifice that secures their redemption.

Jesus’ words were shocking, as Jewish tradition strongly forbade betraying an Israelite into Gentile hands. Yet He spoke plainly, preparing His disciples for what was to come. His willingness to be delivered into the hands of men demonstrates His love and obedience to the Father, inviting each reader to consider the depth of His sacrifice and the certainty of His sovereign plan.
