Matthew 19:27

Listen to this article

“Then answered Peter and said unto him, Behold, we have forsaken all, and followed thee; what shall we have therefore?”

Context:This verse is part of a conversation between Jesus and His disciples. In the previous verses, Jesus had a discussion with a rich young man who came to Him seeking eternal life. Jesus told him to sell his possessions, give to the poor, and follow Him. The young man went away sad because he was unwilling to give up his wealth. Then Jesus remarked to His disciples how difficult it is for a rich person to enter the kingdom of heaven, which led to Peter’s response in verse 27.

Peter’s Declaration:In verse 27, Peter responds to Jesus’ teaching by stating that he and the other disciples had left everything to follow Him. Peter is essentially asking what their reward will be for sacrificing their possessions and livelihood to become Jesus’ disciples.

Forsaking All for Jesus:Peter’s statement reflects the commitment of the disciples to follow Jesus wholeheartedly. They had left their homes, families, occupations, and possessions to dedicate themselves to Jesus’ ministry. Their decision was a significant sacrifice and an act of faith.

The Disciples’ Expectation:Peter’s question reveals the disciples’ anticipation of a reward for their faithfulness. They were seeking assurance that their sacrifice and loyalty to Jesus would result in a favorable outcome. They wanted to know what they would receive in return for their commitment.

Jesus’ Response (Matthew 19:28-30): Following Peter’s question, Jesus provides a response in the subsequent verses (Matthew 19:28-30). He assures the disciples that they will be rewarded for their faithfulness. Jesus tells them that in the regeneration, when the Son of Man sits on the throne of His glory, the disciples will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. Moreover, Jesus promises that those who have left houses, family, or possessions for His sake will receive a hundredfold and inherit eternal life.

  • Meaning and Application:The exchange between Peter and Jesus in Matthew 19:27 emphasizes the principle of sacrifice and reward in discipleship. The disciples’ decision to forsake all and follow Jesus serves as an example of wholehearted dedication and commitment. They were willing to surrender everything for the sake of following Christ.

This passage reminds us that following Jesus involves sacrifice and a willingness to prioritize Him above all else, even our possessions and relationships. It also highlights that God is not unjust; He recognizes and rewards the sacrifices made for His sake.

As believers today, we can draw lessons from this passage. It encourages us to evaluate our own commitment to Christ and be willing to make sacrifices for His kingdom. It reminds us that our sacrifices and faithfulness will not go unnoticed by God, and He will reward us accordingly, both in this life and in eternity.

In summary, Matthew 19:27 highlights Peter’s acknowledgment of the disciples’ sacrifice and his inquiry about their future reward. Jesus assures them that their commitment will be recognized and rewarded. This passage teaches us the importance of sacrificial discipleship and reminds us that God acknowledges and rewards our faithfulness.
