Bethany was a village located on the eastern slope of the Mount of Olives, about two miles (fifteen furlongs) from Jerusalem. It was a place where Jesus had friends and followers, including Mary, Martha, and Lazarus. The act of leaving the city and going to Bethany likely provided Jesus with a respite from the intensity of the events in Jerusalem, allowing for rest and fellowship with close friends.

Meaning

Jesus’ departure from Jerusalem was not an act of fear or retreat. He withdrew from the hostile religious authorities because His hour had not yet come, and He also avoided any appearance of seizing political power, as He had just been hailed as the Son of David. His deliberate movements during Passion Week show both His humanity in needing rest and His continued teaching of the disciples in a quieter setting.

This verse also highlights a contrast: the rejection He faced in Jerusalem and the welcome He received in Bethany, a place of faith and friendship. The pattern of leaving Jerusalem in the evening and returning in the morning is also seen in Mark 11:11 and 11:19, where Jesus went out to Bethany with the Twelve. The next morning, He returned to the city and cursed the fig tree, a symbolic act of judgment on a nation that had outward religion but no fruit.

Application

Jesus’ actions remind us of the importance of taking time for rest and renewal in the midst of demanding or tumultuous circumstances. He exemplified the need to withdraw from the pressures of life and spend time in fellowship with loved ones, finding strength and encouragement in their company.
