Matthew 22:13

Then said the king to the seruants, Binde him hand and foot, and take him away, and cast him into outer darkenesse, there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Matthew 22:13 (KJV)

This verse comes towards the end of the parable, where Jesus is illustrating the kingdom of heaven using the imagery of a wedding feast. In the parable a king prepared a wedding feast for his son and invited many guests, but those who were invited did not come. The king then sent out his servants to invite anyone they found, both good and bad, to fill the wedding hall.

When the king entered the wedding hall he noticed a man who was not wearing wedding garments. In Jewish culture it was customary for hosts to provide wedding garments for their guests, and by not wearing the appropriate garment the man showed disrespect and disregard for the king’s invitation and provision. The king addressed the man in verse 12, asking, “Friend, how camest thou in hither not having a wedding garment?” The man was speechless, and the king commanded his servants to bind him hand and foot, cast him into outer darkness, where there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

The king represents God the Father, who prepares the wedding feast and desires to invite people into a relationship with Him and to partake in His kingdom. The wedding feast symbolizes the blessings, joy, and fellowship of the kingdom of heaven that God offers to humanity, representing the ultimate culmination of His redemptive plan.

The initial guests who rejected the invitation represent the religious leaders and people of Israel who refused to accept Jesus as the Messiah and rejected the call to enter into a relationship with God’s kingdom. When those guests refused, the king sent his servants to invite anyone they found, highlighting God’s inclusive invitation to all people regardless of social status, background, or past sins.

The man without a wedding garment symbolizes those who attempt to enter the kingdom on their own terms, relying on their own righteousness rather than accepting God’s grace and salvation through faith in Jesus Christ. The wedding garment represents the righteousness of Christ, which believers receive by faith when they accept His invitation.

The severe consequence of being bound and cast into outer darkness with weeping and gnashing of teeth illustrates the judgment and separation from God that awaits those who reject His invitation and refuse to accept His provision of salvation through Jesus Christ.
