Listen to this article

“Then went the Pharisees, and took counsel how they might entangle him in his talk.”

Context:Matthew 22:15 is part of a series of encounters between Jesus and the religious leaders in Jerusalem. These leaders, including the Pharisees, were constantly trying to challenge Jesus and find fault with Him. In this particular instance, they sought to trap Jesus in His words.

The Pharisees’ motive:The Pharisees approached Jesus with the intention of testing Him and finding an opportunity to accuse Him. They were attempting to entangle Jesus in His talk to discredit Him before the people.

Jesus’ wisdom:Throughout His ministry, Jesus displayed incredible wisdom in handling the questions and traps set by His adversaries. He was aware of their ulterior motives and the hypocrisy of their hearts. Jesus consistently responded with divine insight, exposing their hypocrisy and teaching valuable lessons.

Lessons for believers:a) The importance of discernment: This passage highlights the importance of being discerning in our interactions with others. The Pharisees disguised their malicious intent under the pretence of seeking knowledge. As believers, we should pray for discernment and wisdom when faced with challenging situations or people who may have ulterior motives.

b) The power of truth: Jesus, as the embodiment of truth, never wavered in His response. He did not succumb to the traps set by the Pharisees but spoke the truth boldly. We can learn from His example by embracing and proclaiming the truth, even when faced with opposition or attempts to deceive us.

c) Guarding our hearts: The Pharisees’ hearts were filled with malice and a desire to undermine Jesus. As followers of Christ, it is essential to guard our hearts against pride, hypocrisy, and deceit. We should seek to align our hearts with the values and character of Jesus, allowing the Holy Spirit to transform us.

d) Responding with grace: Although Jesus exposed the hypocrisy of the Pharisees, He consistently responded with grace and wisdom. He used these encounters as teaching moments to guide His disciples and challenge the hearts of the religious leaders. As believers, we are called to emulate Jesus’ grace in our interactions with others, even in the face of opposition.

Application:When we encounter challenges or attempts to trap us in our faith, we should seek guidance from Scripture and the Holy Spirit. By anchoring ourselves in the truth, remaining discerning, guarding our hearts, and responding with grace, we can navigate such situations in a manner that honours God.
