Matthew 22:19
“Show me the tribute money.” And they brought unto him a penny.
Context:In this verse, we find a dialogue between Jesus and a group of Pharisees who were trying to test Him and trap Him in His words.
They asked Jesus whether it was lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, the Roman emperor. In response, Jesus asked them to show Him the tribute money, and they brought Him a penny.
This verse is part of a broader context found in Matthew 22:15-22, which describes the Pharisees’ attempt to trap Jesus with a question about paying taxes.
The Pharisees were hoping to put Jesus in a difficult position. If Jesus said it was lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, He would be seen as betraying Jewish allegiance. But if He said it was not lawful, He could be accused of rebellion against Roman authority.
However, Jesus, in His divine wisdom, responded with a question that revealed their hypocrisy. He asked to see the tribute money, which was the coin used for paying the tax.
By asking for the coin, Jesus demonstrated that the Pharisees themselves were already using and accepting Roman currency, which had Caesar’s image and inscription on it.
By possessing and using this coin, they were acknowledging Caesar’s authority and implicitly accepting the obligation to pay taxes.
The significance of Jesus’ response goes beyond the specific issue of paying taxes. It teaches us a valuable lesson about the importance of rendering to both God and earthly authorities what is due to them.
Jesus later responds in Matthew 22:21, saying, “Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s; and unto God the things that are God’s.”
This statement emphasizes the need to fulfill both our civic responsibilities and our spiritual duties.
As Christians, we are called to be good citizens and to honor the governing authorities unless they require us to violate God’s commandments.
We are to be honest in our dealings, pay our taxes, and contribute positively to society.
At the same time, we must never neglect our primary allegiance to God.
We are to offer our lives, hearts, and worship to Him, recognizing that our ultimate loyalty belongs to Him alone.
