Matthew 22:20

“And he saith unto them, Whose is this image and superscription?”

Context:This verse is part of a larger passage known as the "Question about Paying Taxes." In this particular encounter, the religious leaders of Jesus’ time attempted to entrap Him with a question regarding paying taxes to Caesar. They hoped to corner Him into either advocating against paying taxes (which would have been seen as rebellion against Roman rule) or endorsing Roman authority (which would have alienated the Jewish people who resented Roman occupation).

When the religious leaders presented a denarius coin to Jesus and asked whose image and inscription were on it, Jesus responded with the question found in Matthew 22:20. This verse is Jesus’ clever and insightful response, which ultimately silenced His opponents and left them amazed.

So, let’s explore the significance and lessons we can learn from this verse:

Acknowledging the authority of earthly powers:Jesus’ question about the image and superscription on the coin highlights the recognition of Caesar’s authority. The image and superscription on the Roman coin were symbols of the Roman Empire’s power and dominion. By acknowledging the coin’s image, Jesus affirms the earthly authority of Caesar.

Recognizing the authority of God:While Jesus acknowledges the authority of Caesar in matters of civil governance, He also reminds His audience of the higher authority of God. By asking "Whose is this image and superscription?" Jesus directs their attention to a deeper understanding of authority beyond the political realm. It points to the fact that they bear the image of God, as human beings created in His likeness.

Balancing earthly and heavenly loyalties:Jesus’ response teaches the importance of balancing our earthly responsibilities with our spiritual allegiance. Christians are called to submit to the governing authorities (Romans 13:1), recognizing their role in maintaining order and justice. However, our ultimate allegiance must always be to God. We are to give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, but we are also to give to God what belongs to God (Matthew 22:21).

Reflecting the image of God:The mention of an image on the coin directs our attention to the idea that as human beings, we are created in the image of God (Genesis 1:27). This highlights our inherent value, dignity, and responsibility as God’s image-bearers. It serves as a reminder to live in a manner that reflects His character and brings glory to Him.

In summary, Matthew 22:20 reminds us of the importance of acknowledging both earthly and heavenly authorities. We are called to fulfil our earthly responsibilities while maintaining our ultimate allegiance to God. As we navigate our lives, we should remember that we bear the image of God and strive to reflect His character in all that we do.
