Matthew 22:22

Posted on 18 May at 14:18
Listen to this article

“When they had heard these words, they marvelled, and left him, and went their way.”

Context:This verse is part of a larger passage in the Gospel of Matthew where the religious leaders, including the Pharisees and the Herodians, tried to trap Jesus with a question about paying taxes to Caesar.

They wanted to create a situation where Jesus would either offend the Roman authorities or alienate the Jewish people who despised paying taxes to their oppressors.

Verse 17:The Pharisees asked Jesus, “Tell us, therefore, what thinkest thou? Is it lawful to give tribute unto Caesar, or not?” Jesus, aware of their malice, responded wisely and perceptively.

He asked to see a coin used for paying taxes and inquired whose image and inscription were on it. They replied, “Caesar’s.” Then Jesus gave them a profound answer in verse 21, saying, “Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s, and unto God the things that are God’s.”

This response astounded the religious leaders and left them speechless.

Verse 22:follows, stating, “When they had heard these words, they marveled, and left him, and went their way.” This verse indicates that the religious leaders, upon hearing Jesus’ answer, were amazed by His wisdom and were unable to find fault with His response.

They had come with the intention to trap Him, but Jesus’ reply exposed their ulterior motives and left them with no grounds to continue their questioning.

The broader lesson conveyed in this passage is the importance of giving proper respect and obedience to both earthly authorities and to God.

Jesus teaches that while we have responsibilities to our governments and societies, we must also recognize our ultimate allegiance and devotion to God.

It is a reminder to prioritize our spiritual obligations while fulfilling our earthly duties.

Furthermore, this passage highlights Jesus’ wisdom and His ability to navigate complex situations with clarity and discernment.

It serves as an example for believers to seek wisdom from God and respond to challenges in a manner that reflects His teachings.

Overall, Matthew 22:22 provides insight into Jesus’ interactions with the religious leaders of His time and encourages believers to uphold their civic duties while remaining faithful to God.
