Matthew 22:23

Listen to this article

“The same day came to him the Sadducees, which say that there is no resurrection, and asked him,”

Context:In this passage, Jesus is engaged in a series of debates with various religious groups who are trying to test and trap Him with their questions. The Sadducees, a Jewish sect that denied the resurrection of the dead, approach Jesus with a question.

The Sadducees were a Jewish sect during the time of Jesus. They were mostly comprised of priests and aristocrats and held significant influence in the religious and political spheres of Jewish society. The Sadducees rejected certain teachings and beliefs held by other Jewish groups, such as the resurrection of the dead, the existence of angels, and the concept of an afterlife.

Who were the Sadducees? The Sadducees were a Jewish sect during the time of Jesus. They were mostly comprised of priests and aristocrats and held significant influence in the religious and political spheres of Jewish society. The Sadducees rejected certain teachings and beliefs held by other Jewish groups, such as the resurrection of the dead, the existence of angels, and the concept of an afterlife.

What was the Sadducees’ question to Jesus? The Sadducees, who did not believe in the resurrection, asked Jesus a hypothetical question to challenge His teachings. They presented a scenario involving a woman who had been married to seven brothers, each of whom died. Their question was based on the practice of levirate marriage, where a man would marry his brother’s widow to raise up offspring for his deceased brother.

What was the purpose of the Sadducees’ question? The Sadducees’ question aimed to discredit the idea of resurrection and challenge Jesus’ authority. They attempted to create a seemingly insurmountable theological problem by using an extreme scenario involving multiple marriages and the resurrection, to show what they considered to be a logical flaw in the belief in resurrection.

How did Jesus respond to the Sadducees? Jesus responded to the Sadducees by first addressing their lack of understanding regarding the Scriptures and the power of God. He then explained that marriage and human relationships, as we know them on earth, do not exist in the same way in the resurrection. He emphasized that in the resurrection, people are like angels and no longer marry or are given in marriage. Jesus affirmed the reality of the resurrection and used their own Scriptures to support His argument.

What can we learn from this passage? a. Jesus’ response teaches us that the resurrection is a reality. As believers, we have the hope of eternal life and a resurrected body through faith in Christ.

b. Jesus highlighted the importance of understanding the Scriptures and knowing the power of God. The Sadducees’ lack of knowledge hindered their understanding of important spiritual truths.

c. We can observe Jesus’ wisdom and authority in dealing with challenging questions. His response serves as an example for us to approach difficult questions and challenges to our faith with wisdom, knowledge, and reliance on God’s Word.

  • Application:This passage reminds us of the importance of studying and understanding Scripture. It is crucial to have a solid foundation in God’s Word to discern truth, defend our faith, and respond to challenges effectively. Additionally, we should cultivate a relationship with God, seeking to know His power and the hope we have in the resurrection. As we engage in discussions about our faith, let us do so with humility, love, and the wisdom that comes from the Holy Spirit.

Remember, while this Bible study provides insights into the passage, it is always beneficial to further explore the Scriptures and seek additional resources to gain a deeper understanding.
