Matthew 23:12

Listen to this article

“But whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.”

This verse is part of a larger passage known as the “Seven Woes” in which Jesus denounces the religious leaders of His time, specifically the scribes and Pharisees, for their hypocrisy and self-righteousness. In this particular verse, Jesus teaches a powerful lesson about humility and pride.

Context:To better understand this verse, it’s essential to consider the context in which it was spoken. Jesus was addressing a large crowd of people and His disciples, warning them about the scribes and Pharisees. These religious leaders were known for their outward displays of piety and their desire for recognition and honour from others.

Warning against self-exaltation:Jesus begins by saying, “whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased.” Here, He is cautioning against the act of self-exaltation or self-promotion. This refers to the prideful attitude of seeking honour, recognition, or status for oneself. Jesus teaches that those who elevate themselves in this way will ultimately be brought low or humbled.

Encouragement to humility:In the latter part of the verse, Jesus says, “he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.” Jesus emphasises the importance of humility. He encourages His listeners to adopt a humble posture rather than seeking to exalt themselves. The act of humbling oneself involves acknowledging one’s limitations, submitting to God’s authority, and serving others with a selfless attitude.

Spiritual principle:This verse conveys an important spiritual principle that is repeated throughout the Bible. God values humility and despises pride. Those who exalt themselves and seek to elevate their own status or importance will face consequences, while those who humble themselves before God and others will be exalted or lifted up by God.

Application:This verse serves as a reminder to Christians to cultivate humility in their lives. It encourages us to avoid pride, arrogance, and seeking self-glory. Instead, we should strive to follow the example of Jesus, who humbled Himself by taking on human form and sacrificing Himself for our salvation. Humility allows us to recognise our need for God’s grace and enables us to serve others with love and compassion.

In conclusion, Matthew 23:12 teaches us the importance of humility and the danger of pride. By humbling ourselves and seeking to serve others, we align ourselves with God’s values and open ourselves up to His blessings and exaltation.
