And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.

Context

Jesus spoke these words on the Mount of Olives in response to His disciples’ question about the sign of His coming and the end of the age. In the surrounding verses, He warns of false messiahs, wars, famines, earthquakes, persecution, and apostasy. He urges endurance and faithfulness, then gives this promise: the gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world, and then the end will come.

Meaning

The phrase “this gospel of the kingdom” refers to the good news that Jesus Christ brings salvation and that God’s reign is breaking into the world through Him. It is the message Jesus Himself preached and later entrusted to His apostles. The Greek word translated “world” is oikoumenē, meaning the inhabited earth, and the word for “witness” is martyrion, meaning testimony. The preaching is not merely an announcement; it is a testimony to all nations of the truth of God’s redemptive plan.

Jesus states that this gospel will be preached “in all the world for a witness unto all nations.” This indicates the global scope of the proclamation. It does not necessarily mean every individual will hear it, but that the message will be carried to every people group as a testimony. The task began with the early apostles and continues through missionary work, evangelism, and the use of various media.

The verse concludes, “and then shall the end come.” The “end” refers to the culmination of the age and the fulfillment of God’s purposes.
