But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

Context

Jesus spoke these words on the Mount of Olives after leaving the temple with His disciples. They had asked Him about the sign of His coming and the end of the age (Matthew 24:1-3). In His answer, He warned them of coming events and then gave this comparison to the days of Noah.

Meaning

Jesus draws a direct parallel between the time before the flood and the time of His return. The days of Noah refer to the period described in Genesis 6, when human wickedness filled the earth and people ignored God’s warnings. Just as the flood came suddenly upon that generation, so will the coming of the Son of Man be sudden and unexpected. The phrase “coming of the Son of Man” is Jesus’ own title for Himself, emphasizing His divine authority and His role as judge.

Biblical connections

The parallel also appears in Luke 17:26-27, where Jesus compares the days of Noah to the days of the Son of Man. In both passages, the focus is not on the flood itself but on the spiritual condition of humanity: people were preoccupied with ordinary life and unrepentant. Noah, however, was saved through the flood, showing that God preserves the righteous while judging the ungodly.

Application

This verse warns believers to be vigilant and spiritually prepared. The world will be engrossed in its usual activities, unconcerned about God’s judgment. Jesus elaborates in Matthew 24:38-44, urging His followers to watch and be ready at all times. Believers are called to live faithfully and urgently, making the most of the time given, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when many do not expect Him.
